What to prepare before commissioning a website

A practical checklist that saves weeks of delay and ensures the quote you receive is accurate, not a guess.

Most website project delays do not happen in development — they happen waiting for information that could have been prepared upfront. This checklist saves weeks.

1. One clear goal

What action should a visitor take? Request a quote, buy a product, book an appointment, download a file? A site trying to do everything achieves nothing.

2. A page list

Define the core pages and what appears on each. This list is the basis of any accurate time and cost estimate.

3. Written content

Even in draft form, real copy fundamentally changes the design. Designing around placeholder text always causes major revisions later.

4. Images and identity

A high-quality logo file, colours, fonts, and real photography of your business if you have it. Genuine photos lift a site more than any visual effect.

5. Examples you like

Three sites you like with a specific reason for each. "I liked how organised it is" or "I liked how clear the pricing is" is far more useful than "it looks nice".

6. Who decides?

Name one person responsible for approvals. Multiple opinions with no final decision-maker is the number one cause of project delays.

7. Domain and hosting

Knowing who owns the domain and having hosting access saves significant time at launch.
